Why this matters more than it sounds
Home health care is not a single appointment. It is a daily conversation about medication, about pain, about what changed since yesterday — held with someone who may be eighty years old and tired.
When that conversation happens in a second language, detail is lost. Patients understate symptoms because the words are hard. Families translate for their parents and become an obstacle between the patient and the nurse.
Northbrook and the north suburbs of Chicago are home to large Polish and Russian speaking communities. Being able to speak with a patient directly is not a nicety here. It is the difference between care that works and care that is merely delivered.
